Now a backpacker’s heaven, Laos was a no go area for travellers for years. And still far from its neighbours in terms of numbers of tourists, it’s the perfect place for getting away from it all! Its small, charming towns are like a blast from the past, where old colonial houses mingle with dazzling temples. And with the mighty Mekong at its heart and amazing scenery, spending time in this undiscovered country is pure bliss. Not to mention its tantalising food and idyllic Beerlao – perfect to cool down in that tropical heat. Tempted? So were we!
Laos is full of serene landscapes and ancient customs – discover the quiet and relaxing charms of Vientiane, get the adrenaline pumping hiking, biking and caving in Vang Vieng and explore the beautiful historic temples, multicultural traditions and rich culture in Luang Prabang.
Top Spots in Laos
If quaint towns, pretty temples, picture perfect scenes and rugged jungles sounds like your kind of thing, then Laos needs to be hiked up to the number one spot on your bucket list! Step back in time and be at one with nature, try a little zen and try even more street food. The perfect country to lose (and probably ‘find’) yourself, here are a few of our top picks for Laos.
Luang Prabang
Always featured on ‘best places to go in Laos’ lists, and rightly so, Luang Prabang is oozing with charm and beauty. Visit ornate temples, a vibrant night market and watch the world go by in its street cafes. Sitting right on the Mekong there are great opportunities to take boat rides up the river, and if that wasn’t enough the incredible Kuang Si water falls are a short tuk tuk ride away. Dreamy!
Vientiane
Possibly the sleepiest capital in the world, Vientiane is yet another blast from the past. This former French trading post is still home to many pretty colonial buildings and is full of crowd pleasing Laotian scenes. Buddhist monks wander the streets, Pha That Luang temple shines day and night, and small boutique restaurants lining the Mekong serve up amazing local dishes – just perfect at sunset!
Vang Vieng
After a short stint as a backpacker party town, Van Vieng has now calmed down and is known for its nature-based activities along the Nam Song river. Floating down the meandering waters in tubes is a particularly popular activity, as is kayaking and caving. The surrounding Laotian countryside offers rugged scenery and striking rock formations and the nearby villages are yet again, picture perfect.
Laos’ Natural Wonders
Laos is perfect for really getting off the beaten track. With villages dotted along the Mekong, beautiful mountains and thick jungle, this really is heaven for the adventurer in you. Although not too tourist friendly in terms of public transport (think long, rickety busses) it’s great if you have a little more time on your hands. And if not there are some convenient hop-on-hop-off routes to help.
